PRIME: Perfecting the Patient-Centered Room Strategy
Senior Associate | Senior Medical Planner, CallisonRTKL
Associate Vice President, Capital Planning, Projects and Facilities, Evangelical Community Hospital
Chief Nursing Officer, Evangelical Community Hospital
The Patient Room Improvement, Modernization, and Enhancement (PRIME) project encompasses all the elements of an 'escape room' experience. In an escape room, teams enter and use their collective talents to solve a puzzle in order to exit. This session will address how the collaboration between a multidisciplinary team of architects from CallisonRTKL, front line staff, patients, families, and community members formed the complement that masters the pieces of the puzzle to perfect the patient-centered room strategy. For example, despite a high level of care, quality staff, and strong leadership, the aging building, and infrastructure at the Evangelical Community Hospital needed modernization. With a newly proposed patient tower, critical, intermediate, and medical/surgical units, the design of the new patient room was critical to the success of the hospital's established priorities and goals. The construction of a physical mock-up became Evangelical's own escape room.
1. Describe how the hospital's culture shifted from “this is how we do it" to a modern, optimal workflow focused on the patient and staff experience.
2. Identify how using both a physical mock-up and a virtual reality mock-up give the client an experiential and holistic understanding of room design.
3. Explain how data was collected and survey results were presented to the client and incorporated into the design.
4. Exemplify how the collective talents of architects and healthcare professionals can be leveraged to perfect the patient-centered room strategy.
