Austin, TX (July 25, 2024) – Each year at Healthcare Facilities Symposium and Expo, one of the country’s largest and leading shows dedicated to healthcare design and facilities, architects, designers, engineers, contractors and providers gather to collaborate, share research, hear fresh perspectives and participate in the ever-changing healthcare industry. HFSE is pleased to announce a powerful lineup of Keynote speakers headlined by Dr. Esmaeil Porsa, President and Chief Executive Officer for Harris Health System, Dan Chuparkoff, Innovation & A.I. Expert, and Tama Duffy Day, FACHE, FIIDA, FASID, LEED AP, FwA, Principal, Gensler.

“This year’s Symposium Keynotes will offer meaningful insight into the defining trends that impact the healthcare facilities industry including the effects of Mass Incarceration on Population Health, AI in Healthcare, and the importance of design in healthcare and wellness,” said Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director. “The ever-popular Keynote presentations are always a huge draw at HFSE and this year is no exception with a diverse and inspiring line-up.”

Keynote Presentations:

Tuesday, September 24, 8:30am

This year’s Opening Keynote speaker is Dr. Esmaeil Porsa who serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer for Harris Health System, which is a community-focused, academic and safety-net healthcare system dedicated to improving the health of those most in need in Harris County, Texas. Dr. Porsa will present the “Impact of Mass Incarceration on Population Health”. Over the past five decades, there is an exponential growth in the number of people in the United States who are incarcerated in local, State and Federal correctional facilities. During this time, a disproportionate number of Black and Hispanic men and women have been incarcerated in the United States. As a result, the mass incarceration and more specifically repeat and disproportionate incarceration of the communities of color has had a dramatic and negative impact on the overall health and livelihood of not only those directly impacted by this i.e. Black and Hispanic detainees within our correctional facilities, but also their families and loved ones and our entire nation.

“It is commonly accepted that the U.S. leads the world in our health technology and our ability to treat the most complicated medical issues,” said Dr. Esmaeil Porsa. “Yet even though we spend more on health care than any other country in the world, our health outcomes including our life expectancy continues to lag behind all other western countries. In my Keynote address, I will examine the impact of incarceration practices in the U.S. as one reason behind our overall poor health grade.”

Wednesday, September 25, 9:15am

Dan Chuparkoff, Innovation & A.I. Expert will present “AI and the Future of Healthcare Systems and Spaces”, building on this hot topic of AI shaping the healthcare industry. Preparing for an AI-future might be the most important challenge of today. But people are already overwhelmed by a firehose of change. Now teams are skeptical and anxious about the disruption that A.I. might bring. Today, it’s critical for teams to understand how AI will impact our systems, our services, our spaces, and the way we work. Dan is a leader with 30 years of experience running some of the smartest, most tech-forward teams in the world. He’s led technology projects for some of the biggest hospital systems in the world. He built the teams who served billions of customers. Along the way, he discovered that technology is the foundation of everything that we build, from the services we deliver… to the spaces where we deliver them.

“The world is changing fast. AI and other technological improvements are going to drive dramatic changes in the Healthcare Facilities landscape and those changes will transform levels of care for tomorrow’s patients,” said Dan Chuparkoff. “Smart facilities, personalized patient experiences, and virtual health assistants are just a few of the forces driving transformations in the healthcare ecosystem. I’m looking forward to an exciting discussion with attendees at HFSE on September 25th!”

Thursday, September 26, 11am

The closing Keynote, “Learning and Designing: The Source of Agency to Change The World” will feature speaker Tama Duffy Day, FACHE, FIIDA, FASID, LEED AP, FwA, Principal, Gensler. Design has the power to change the world and to positively affect healing and promote well-being. Be an armchair traveler with industry pioneer, Tama Duffy Day, as she shares her history with the Symposium, tells stories of the power of design, and describes the inspirational legacy of her 40+ years of being a global leader in health and wellness.

“Design has the power to change the world and to positively affect healing and promote well-being,” said Tama Duffy Day. “In the early stages of my career, I thought that design was only the creation of the physical spaces, but in observing and engaging more fully in the process of design, I came to realize that designing the social space was equally important. I’m excited to share more about this learning during my closing keynote address at HFSE on September 26
