A month ago, when we decided to have a special May issue of The Leaflet I could not have imagined we would also be announcing our 2020 event will not take place. Certainly, I knew it was a possibility but at that time September seemed so far off and holding an event would be possible. Since then, we've talked to our amazing advisory board and understand what they are facing in healthcare systems, AEC firms and their own homes all across the country. We've talked to officials at the Long Beach Convention Center and our industry partners such at NOAH. And we've met internally and talked about what it would mean to try and hold the Symposium this fall. At the end of the day, the hard reality is we cannot see how an event whose core mission is about health could in good conscience expect folks to travel and come together this September.
In 1999, the Symposium was supposed to be in Boca Raton when hurricane Floyd was barreling towards the coast. We rescheduled the event to December in Orlando and I was part of that event team. It was early in my career and my first experience at rescheduling an event. Hard to believe 21 years later I am part of the team making the decision to not hold a Symposium for the first time in its 33-year history. But a lot of us are doing things that just 12 weeks ago would not have seemed possible.
No one expected to be erecting hospital wards in convention centers, printing masks on 3D printers, or donating wayfinding for clinics set up in tents in parking lots across the country. And yet that is what you are all doing during the time. I have never been so proud to be part of this amazing healthcare design and construction industry as I have in the past months as I've heard all the stories of how you are serving those on the front lines.
It will give us so much to talk about when we come together again. Speaking of which, in 2021 we'll be heading back to Austin, Texas on September 21-23 as our goal has been to try to get on a rotation of cities in the East, West and Midwest. And in order to accomplish that, we will be going to Long Beach in 2022 on September 27-29. Mark your calendars.
Also be sure to check out this video as I talk more about our decision to not hold an event this year.
