Clay graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and immediately joined SSR, then a single office firm of 50 people in Nashville, TN. In his early career, Clay focused on mechanical design for healthcare facilities across the Southeast and Southwest regions of the United States. In 1984, Clay moved to Houston, TX to help open what was then SSR’s first branch office, which he managed from 1986 to 1996 before returning to Nashville. Clay is a registered Professional Engineer in seven states and specializes in project management and delivery methodologies, market sector strategy and client relationships, as SSR’s national healthcare market leader. Clay serves on several national healthcare related organizations and industry committees, including American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) and the Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI) Health Facilities Guidelines Revisions Committee. Clay co-authored ASHE’s Health Facility Commissioning Guidelines and the subsequent Handbook. He is a frequent speaker at industry events and is recognized for his knowledge of the healthcare market and emerging trends in facility design, construction and management.
