Facility Tour: The Design Institute and UT Health Austin Clinic
The Design Institute for Health, is a first-of-its-kind institute born from the radical collaboration between Dell Medical School and the College of Fine Arts at The University of Texas at Austin. Health is one of the last frontiers to embrace design as a creative, human-centered approach to defining and solving problems. Through design, the Design Institute provokes every aspect of health systems to work better for people. Our embedded team of health design specialists uses creative problem-solving methods to deeply understand the needs of patients and providers, generate fresh systemic approaches, and rapidly prototype and realize solutions.
Provoking New Behaviors: UT Health Austin Clinic Experience Design
In October 2017, Dell Medical School opened UT Health Austin, a set of clinics and care teams designed around health conditions. The initial set of clinics focused on conditions most impacting health across Travis County. The Design Institute collaborated on the space design, service design, tool design, and systems design to co-create an entirely new experience centered around people: patients, caregivers, and providers. Learn more about the clinic design case study at DesignInHealth.org.
This behind the scenes tour of the UT Health Austin clinics is designed to take Healthcare Facilities Symposium & Expo attendees on a rare journey through the clinics on a day when patients are not being seen. Design Institute leaders will provide insights on the design process that led to the functioning clinics where patient-centered environments improve care experiences. The clinics reorient the experience and provoke entirely new relationships between patients and providers, within care teams, and most importantly, between a patient and their role in their health.
