  • Austin Here We Come
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
We are on the road again! This time heading to the thriving city of Austin, Texas. The Symposium will celebrate 30 years in this must visit destination.
  • Gratitude
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
I looked back to see what I wrote about in this space last December and I shared my experience about being in a hospital bed for the first time. Then I looked back to 2014 and saw that I wrote that column from beside my mother’s hospital bed. Fortunately I have no medical experiences to contemplate on this year which makes me feel very grateful. ‘Tis the season for reflection and focusing on the important things in life so excuse me while I do just that this year.
  • Top 5 Highlights from this Year’s Symposium
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
It is remarkable to me that this will be the third time I will share my top moments from the Symposium in this column. It seems like just yesterday I started this column as a way to communicate with all of you throughout the year and in reality it has been over three years. The Leaflet itself is an extension of the event, a way to offer insight and education throughout the year. And this column is a way for me to reach all of you throughout the year to point out the important things happening. I am going to indulge in looking back as I continue the tradition of sharing my top 5 favorite things from this year’s event.
  • The Symposium is fast approaching
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
Those long days of summer are once again shortening and before we know it the cool, crisp fall air will be here (I hope). Of course that also means the Symposium is close, in fact it’s just over 3 weeks away. With the event fast approaching I thought I’d do the same thing I did a year ago and share with you my top 3 things I am looking forward to at this year’s event.
  • #OrlandoStrong
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
This year the Symposium will be held in Orlando and we are looking forward to spending time and exploring this great city. Like of all of you, we have been heartbroken by the recent events in Orlando. We look forward to being there this September to demonstrate that while it is certainly not business as usual, we stand with Orlando.
  • First Look at the Conference Program
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
It is finally here! Our 2016 conference program was unveiled earlier this week. Have you checked it out yet? I am very excited about this year’s program and hope you take some time to look over the amazing sessions we have put together. Some of our “fan favorites” are back like John Balzer with Froedtert, Jim Lennon with HKS and Frank Pitts with architecture+. We have folks from Stanford Health Care, University of Mississippi Medical Center, Kindred Healthcare and Dignity Health coming to share their stories and expertise with us in September.
  • Orlando Bound
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
Have you heard the news? For the first time in 10 years the Symposium will be held somewhere other than Chicago. We are bringing the networking opportunities, world class educational program, inspiring keynotes, and customer service the Symposium is known for to the South Atlantic Region in 2016. This year we will call the Hilton Orlando home for 3 days in September.
  • View from a Hospital Bed
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
Yesterday for the very first time in my life I got into a hospital bed. I have spent the past two years in countless healthcare settings taking care of my mother observing the good and bad of our health system....
  • Top 5 Highlights from this Year’s Symposium
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
Another Symposium is in the books! Once again I am overwhelmed with the dynamic people who come together at our event. While the subjects and information discussed can be found through other forums, the pillar of our event is the way folks connect and it’s a true testament to the passion and dedication of our community. Last year I shared my top 5 moments from the event and I thought that is a good tradition to continue so here goes.
  • The Symposium Is Almost Here!
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
I am a New England girl – I love all seasons and the change from one to the next. I know for many of you summer winding down is an unwelcome occurrence. For me it means that not only is my favorite season of all almost upon us but that soon we will all be back at the Symposium.
  • The Symposium on the Road - Stop 2
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
In late April I continued on my road trips to see our board members in their offices. This time I found myself in downtown Chicago as the guest of Lynn Murphy, Director, Planning and Project Management for Northwestern Memorial HealthCare. I was there for half a day only observing and yet I left exhausted!
  • The Symposium on the Road
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
Last month I had the opportunity to spend the day with one of our advisory board members, Jessica Gutierrez-Rodriguez, Assistant Superintendent with the Texas Department of State Health Service. Jessica graciously agreed to take me around two hospitals under her supervision. The morning started with another board member, Brian McFarlane, Principal | HC Group Director for Development with HKS, Inc. and I arriving at the Texas Center for Infectious Disease (TCID). Jessica greeted us and we were quickly introduced to James Elkins, Hospital Director, TCID Administration since 1994.
  • Coming together to design an event for you
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
For 8 years now we have held our advisory board meeting on one of the last Friday's in January in Chicago. It never ceases to amaze me the turnout we get at this meeting. It's always bitter cold, it is January in Chicago, but yet we have never had snow or weather impacting people's travel plans. Without fail again this year around the table sat all but three of our board members. If you were a fly on the wall in this room you would get to observe over 30 industry leaders engaged in a day-long healthcare design think tank...all more than ready, willing and able to collaborate on ideas and plans for this year's Symposium.
  • It's all about the...people
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
I started this column, as I sat in the patient room of an orthopedic hospital beside a family member recovering from surgery. And I finished it sitting beside the same family member in a rehabilitation center as they build back their strength and mobility. For the past week I have spent an average of 8 hours a day in one of these facilities and have observed quite a lot.
  • Top 5 Highlights from this Year's Symposium
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
Just two weeks ago many of you gathered in Chicago with us for the annual Healthcare Facilities Symposium & Expo and it was an amazing week. I wanted to use this space to share with you some of the highlights from the event and since there were so many I decided to pick my top 5.
  • Fall is in the Air
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
Here in New England it's smelled and felt like fall the past few mornings! That crisp, clean air that can only mean apples, leaves beginning to turn, the start of a new school year and of course it means that this year's Symposium is right around the corner. In less than 6 weeks we will be heading to Chicago to once again come together and learn from each other.
  • The Invaluable Resource
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
In today's world information is everywhere, but despite that folks keep coming to conferences and tradeshows and that is because the physical interaction with like-minded individuals is so invaluable. Hearing from speakers in person and being able to ask questions about the projects they are discussing or trends that are presenting and then being able to interact with them makes learning that much better.
  • New Year, New Look
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
Every year we develop a different marketing campaign for the event but this year as we went down that path, we ended up with something very different...
  • Meeting in the Polar Vortex
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
Have you had a single conversation lately that hasn't included some mention of the weather? I'm not sure there is a part of the country that hasn't been impacted by extreme or overwhelming weather this winter. Chicago certainly has had its fair share and once again our advisory board was planning to gather there for our annual meeting and the weather was not cooperating.
  • Wishing you a Happy & Healthy New Year
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
The Symposium has always been about creating healing environments for patients, families and staff. I wonder if sometimes the last part of that isn't paid as much attention to as we should.
  • The Heart of the Symposium
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
Of all the things I worry about going into an event each year, having the government shut down the night before we kick off is not normally on my list. And yet that is what happened earlier this month, so I fully expected to not see many of our attendees from Veterans Affairs and other government agencies on Tuesday morning.
  • My Experience with the Future of Healthcare
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
There is so much talk these days about what the future of healthcare will look like and what that means for the design and construction industry. As much as I read, talk to industry experts and participate in educational seminars, my real life experience as a patient is very limited. Until this week I have only had experiences with wellness visits and the occasional sick visit for a cold or flu. However, that all changed when I woke up in the middle of the night with an excruciating pain in my upper back and difficulty breathing.
  • Why Choose The Symposium
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
By now you've had time to look at our 2013 conference program online and soon our conference brochure will be hitting your desk, if it hasn't already. The lineup of educational sessions and speakers is top notch. The networking opportunities are unique and plentiful. And you'll have access to over 200 exhibitors on the exhibition floor.
  • Symposium Conference Program Unveiled
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
It is finally here! Our 2013 conference program was unveiled last week. Have you checked it out yet? You really should take some time to look over the amazing sessions we have put together for you this year.
  • The Advisory Board Conversation
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
Picture it . . . Chicago January 2013 and it is 7 degrees out. I look around a table on the 14th floor of the Perkins + Will office to see over 30 dedicated professionals. What would make these folks travel from as far (and as warm) as Arizona, Florida and California or in some cases as close as the other end of Michigan Avenue?
  • The Symposium Conference Program
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
This is one of my favorite times of year! The holidays are wonderful of course. But what I'm really referring to is the time when the conference program for the Symposium is a blank slate.
  • Celebrating 25 Years
Jenabeth Ferguson, Vice President, Symposium Director
How do you celebrate 25 years of learning, networking and inspiration? That was the question posed to us a year ago as we began to plan for the 25th Healthcare Facilities Symposium & Expo. In the end, the answer was somewhat simple - hold what is being touted as the best event in 25 years.
